These Gorgeous Mother of Pearl Chilton Letter Openers Regal 14K gold plated dip ink nib quill pen were purchased on the historic U.S.S. Utah in the Ship's Store, the receipt is dated January 21st, 1928. With research, and knowledge from the owner, we have found out that on October 24th, 1927, the U.S.S. Utah got underway from the Boston Navy Yard, recently updated with modern out fittings, it headed south on a Shakedown Cruise into Cuban waters. The Utah spent the rest of 1927 into part of 1928 training and trying out her new systems. These Letter Openers & Regal Nib Pen were likely purchased on this Shakedown Cruise.
The U.S.S. Utah was the second and final member of the Florida class of dreadnought battleships. It was the first Battle ship named after the State of Utah. It was Commissioned into the naval fleet by the United States Navy on August of 1911. It served in World War One, and also carried dignitaries on tours to South America in 1924 and 1928.
The U.S.S. Utah was stationed in the port of Pearl Harbor when the attacks by the Japanese on December 7th 1941 occurred. In the first two minutes of the attack it was struck by two torpedoes, causing severe flooding. The Utah quickly rolled over, and sank. The vast majority of her men were able to escape, but sadly, sixty four men were killed on that fateful day. The wreck of the U.S.S. Utah still sits in its final resting place in the port of Pearl Harbor, forever a reminder of that sad and fateful day. The same U.S.S. Utah that these beautiful Chilton Mother of Pearl letter openers & Regal Nib Pen were purchased on.
They are truly a timeless piece of American History, that now is available to the public.
