Hugh Edward "Hughie" Thomasson Jr. (August 13, 1952 – September 9, 2007)[1][2] was an American guitarist and singer, best known as a founding member of Outlaws and as a guitarist for Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Biography

Thomasson wrote many of the songs for the Outlaws, including most of their more popular songs like "Hurry Sundown", "There Goes Another Love Song," and "Green Grass and High Tides". Although other band members (especially Henry Paul in the early-1970s lineup) contributed songs and sang lead vocals as well, Hughie was, in many ways, the real heart and soul of the Outlaws. After Outlaws disbanded, Thomasson joined Lynyrd Skynyrd, leaving that band in 2005 to reform Outlaws. Before his death, he contributed to writing of many of Lynyrd Skynyrd's songs on their 2009 album God & Guns, including the single "Still Unbroken."

Thomasson died in his sleep on September 9, 2007 of a heart attack in his home in Brooksville, Florida. He was 55 years old.

SELLERS PAST LIFE

It was unique opportunity for me to become friends with and witness the growth of a band like LYNYRD SKYNYRD with a band leader and song writer like Ronnie Van Zant who like Artimus Pyle said could have made a band like LYNYRD SKYNYRD with six of any other good musicians . But Ronnie's dream of success in the music business was blessed to have included people like Allen Collins , Ed King , Billy Powell , Leon Wilkeson , Bob Burnes , Artimus Pyle & Gary Rossington . Then the ultimate addition of Steve Gaines who himself had been a band leader with Craw Daddy and had written many great songs before joining LYNYRD SKYNYRD .

I met LYNYRD SKYNYRD in 1973 just after they opened for the WHO on the Quadraphenia Tour . I started out as the third roadie ever hired by the band in 1974 as a drum roadie , with many other unique things I did at concerts after the band had played to find different types of entertainment to make things better for the band on the road . During the years between 1974 and 1977 I had advanced to Stage Manager and Production Manager . Then after Ronnie Van Zant fired the drum roadie and guitar tech I became the guitar tech till the time of the crash in which I was a passenger and survived October 20 , 1977.

After the airplane crash I worked as a guitar tech for the 1978 Foreigner World Tour then the 1979 Journey World Tour . I returned to the surviving members of LYNYRD SKYNYRD when the Rossington Collins Band formed in 1980 thru 1983 . At that time Allen Collins started the Allen Collins Band till 1984 . Then I started with The Marshall Tucker Band till 1987 . At which time I reunited with the LYNYRD SKYNYRD Tribute band until I was diagnosed with Hep C and forced to leave in 2006 . During 40 years I accumulated a vast collection of memorabilia that I have been selling for the last few years . This item is a part of my 40 year LYNYRD SKYNYRD Survivor Collection .
