Lillian Gish was an American stage, film and television actress whose career spanned 75 years from
 1912 to 1987. A D.W. Griffith discovery, she starred in many of his films including Birth of a Nation (1915)
and Intolerance (1916). Her sound-era film appearances included Duel in the Sun (1946) for which she was
 nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Gish received a Special Academy Award in
 1971 for superlative artistry and distinguished contribution to the progress of motion pictures. Her younger
 sister, Dorothy Gish, was also a successful film and stage actress.
