Wonderful, 1950's, early version of the reintroduced, Mamod SE3 Horizontal, Live Steam Engine Toy. This outstanding, working Live Steam Engine measures approx. 8" tall to the top of its original, brass smokestack and 10 1/2" x 9 1/4" at the base. The Toy is composed of two elements that are made of brass and iron and mounted on the original tin base. There is a mostly brass, horizontal Steam Engine seated on a tin base which is connected by copper steam lines to pair of cylinders which turn a flywheel by means of drive shafts.

The Toy Steam Engine offered here is what we believe to be the early version of the reintroduced Mamod SE3 Horizontal, Live Steam Engine which was produced from 1957 through the early 1970's. The Mamod SE3 was one of the largest engines in the Mamod line. The engine was introduced in 1936 and at that time it was a single cylinder engine with a flat base, a geared countershaft and a solid brass flywheel. In 1937 a whistle was added. The model was discontinued in 1940 due to the second world war. In 1957 the model was reintroduced, but it was a lot different than the original SE3. The engine got a raised base, twin cylinders, vaporizing burner and a detachable chimney. Through the years this model got several small changes. The whistle was replaced by a spring lever whistle and eventually the engine got a sight glass and a solid furl burner. The Engine offered here has been found online identified as the 1957/58 version of the SE3 - it has no sight glass and does not have the later, spring lever whistle.

We have not tested the Engine but it appears to be in working order and does retain the original vaporizing burner. The Engine is complete and the cylinders, drive shafts and flywheel function smoothly. The boiler is sound and intact with no holes and no repairs. All of the copper steam lines are intact and sound with no bends or repairs. It is possible that the base has been repainted. Please see the scans below for a good indication of the form and condition of this early Mamod SE3 Steam Engine.

A rare and very desirable, 1950's, early version of the reintroduced, Mamod SE3 Horizontal, Live Steam Engine Toy and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!
