At Basis Pet, we're committed to doing things right, and holding our products to real safety standards. Our stainless steel pet food bowls are 100% Made in the USA, right down to the raw material stainless steel itself. We also send one bowl from each batch we produce out for independent testing by a laboratory accredited by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). They test our bowls for the heavy metals lead, mercury, and cadmium and apply the stringent standards set for metal children's toys. Our bowls will never contain a "for pet use only" label. They're perfectly safe for both pets and people.

We're also careful to use the right type of stainless steel. Many folks don't realize it, but there are different grades of stainless steel. Each grade is designed for a specific purpose and each comes at a different price tag. Some manufacturers use a less expensive grade of stainless steel that really isn't optimal for use as a pet food or water bowl. We use only 304 series stainless steel, also referred to as 18/8 stainless steel. It's the grade used most often in food-contact related kitchen items, like mixing bowls, and the responsible choice for pet food bowls. If a manufacturer doesn't specify the grade of stainless steel they use, you should ask!

You may have noticed that we don't apply a non-skid rubber coating to the bottom of our bowls. If sliding is an issue, we think it's best solved by a separate non-skid rubber mat under the bowls, or even with a full size bowl stand. Any non-skid coating we could apply to the bowls would likely fail well before the stainless steel bowl itself. That would shorten the life of the product and we don't think that's smart. By keeping them separate, you maximize the life of the bowl, but you also get the flexibility to choose from many different mat styles and colors or to use a full size bowl stand.

Speaking of stands, we stand behind our items. You'll have 30 days to return your purchase for a full refund and for any reason. We don't charge restocking fees or play any games. We'll even provide prepaid shipping return labels when you contact us to arrange a return or exchange. We do ask, though, that you do your best to minimize the need for a return by reviewing the following size information and recommendations carefully.

Note: The optimal bowl size is partly about how much food or water the bowl holds, but it's also about the diameter of the bowl relative to the size of your dog's head. For instance, our medium size bowl may hold enough food for an 80 lb lab, especially if it's fed 2 or 3 times a day, but the bowl diameter would be pretty small for that size dog. Please consider both our recommend fill information as well as our breed recommendations when selecting a bowl size. If your dog's exact breed isn't listed, please consider a breed that tends to be similar in size and that is listed.

Small Bowls
  • Recommend for toy & miniature breed dogs, typically under 15 lbs or so, like the Yorkie, Chihuahua, Pomeranian, Maltese, Havanese, etc.
  • Dimensions are approximately 5.75" in diameter and 1.5" in height
  • Recommended fill is up to 1 cup (technical capacity when filled to the rim is 2 cups or 1/2 quart)
  • Consider using a small bowl for food and our medium size bowl for water. The small bowl can be used for water but may require frequent refilling due to the limited capacity.

Medium Bowls
  • Recommended for small breed dogs, typically under 30 or 40 lbs, like the Shih Tzu, some Spaniels, Corgi, Beagle, Brittany, Vizslas, Shiba Inu, etc.
  • Dimensions are approximately 6.25" in diameter and 2.75" in height
  • Recommended fill is up to 2 to 3 cups (technical capacity when filled to the rim is 4.5 cups or 1.125 quarts)

Large Bowls
  • Recommended for medium and large breed dogs, typically in the 40 to 90 lb range, like the Standard Poodle, English Bulldog, Australian Shepard, Boxer, Lab, Golden Retriever, Collie, etc.
  • Dimensions are approximately 7.75" in diameter and 3" in height
  • Recommended fill is up to 5 to 6 cups (technical capacity when filled to the rim is 8 cups or 2 quarts)

Extra Large Bowls
  • Recommend for extra large breed dogs, typically over 90 or 100 lbs, like the Doberman, Rottweiler, Bernese, Great Dane, Newfoundland, Wolfhound, Mastiff, St. Bernard, etc.
  • Dimensions are approximately 10.5" in diameter and 3.5" in height
  • Recommended fill is up to 10 to 12 cups (technical capacity when filled to the rim is 18 cups or 4.5 quarts)

Are you looking to fit our bowls in a stand, holder, or feeder from another company? Unfortunately, there are no standards for bowl sizes in the pet industry, so odds are low that one of our bowls will fit a stand from another company. If you'd like to check, start by measuring the diameter of the bowl opening in your stand (not the bowl itself) and compare that measurement to the required opening sizes listed below. Our bowls have a relatively small rim, so what you measure must match the recommended opening size exactly, otherwise our bowls will not fit!

Small bowls - opening must be 5 1/2"
Medium bowls - opening must be 6 1/8"
Large bowls - opening must be 7 1/2"
Extra large bowls - opening must be 10 1/16"
