Antique Silver Niello Work Sewing Kit / Etui

Germany * Circa 1900s

This high quality little sewing kit has an all over checker board niello work* design. It is solid silver and is marked "885" (or maybe 895) for 885/1000 pure silver.

Inside is a gilded silver needle case surrounded by three thread spools/bobbins. The screw on top is a matching silver thimble. It's about an American size 7/8 (14.9 mm diameter opening). There are two needle holes in the top of the thimble. The condition of the etui is otherwise excellent with no dents or other damage and all of the contents appear to be original. The etui measures 2 1/8" long and the top screws on securely.

*Niello work is where a black metallic alloy of sulfur combined with copper, silver, or lead is used to fill an incised design on the surface of the silver. It creates permanent black areas where the pattern has been engraved.
