DESCRIPTION: A Doctor Blade flaw (corrupted from "Ductor Blade") is a generic term for any steel, rubber, plastic, or other type of blade used to apply or remove a liquid substance from another surface, such as blades used in coating paper. In the photogravure stamp printing process used for these stamps (1964 and 1967 gold overprint series), the Doctor Blade is a steel strip used to remove ink from the outside surface of the gravure cylinder.
CONSTANT PRINTING ERROR: ROW 2, STAMP 2 (R2/2) - the doctor blade did not remove the excess green ink, resulting in a green ink line in approximately the "3 o'clock" position of the Queen's head oval medallion, bleeding into the uninked (white) area alongside the perforations, and even extending into the uninked area of the next (3rd) stamp in the row.
This error is from sheet number 909 of the original overprint of the 1964 ½d stamp, resulting from Pitcairn's adoption of decimal currency.
PRINTING HISTORY OF THE ½c on ½d "LONGBOAT" STAMP:
Pitcairn Island, like New Zealand, its center of Administration, converted to decimal currency on 10 July 1967. The Pitcairn definitive series of 1964 was overprinted by gold-blocked thermography in values from ½c (on the ½d stamp) to 45c (on the 8-shilling stamp) with an anchor blocking out the sterling value,
The FIRST Printing of 10 July 1967 (this offer) and SECOND printing of 13 February 1968, with gum arabic on reverse, had the doctor blade flaw present,
On the THIRD Printing of 8 February 1969, with PVA (PolyVinyl Alcohol) gum on reverse, the doctor blade was cleaned, and the flaw retouched. It is absent from R2/2.
