Portia Nelson (born Betty Mae Nelson) was an American popular singer, songwriter, actress
and author. Best known for her appearances in the most prestigious 1950s cabarets. In 1965
she portrayed the cantankerous Sister Berthe in the 1965 film version of The Sound of Music. On
TV she played the nanny, Mrs. Gurney, on the daytime soap All My Children (1983-1991). Other
 films include Doctor Dolittle (1967), The Hardy Boys: The Mystery of the Chinese Junk (1967),
The Other (1972).
