Vermont Rail System chronicles in text and photos the complete history of this unique rail system. Over forty years ago, the State of Vermont and the Vermont Railway pioneered the concept of public funds being used to purchase a moribund railroad that was then leased to a private operator. Thus, a significant portion of the Rutland Railroad has been resurrected in a manner that few could have foreseen. Today's Vermont Rail System is a dynamic organization that is comprised of six affiliates--the Vermont Railway, the Clarendon & Pittsford Railroad, the Green Mountain Railroad, the Washington County Railroad (Montpelier & Barre Division), the Washington County Railroad (Connecticut River Division), and the New York & Ogdensburg Railroad.
The history of each of these entities and their antecedent roads is covered in a separate chapter. The final chapter is a detailed account of the combined activities of these railroads under the banner of the Vermont Rail System through 2005. Many photographers enthusiastically made their material available for this book, and some 425 black & white and color photographs were chosen. In addition, professionally prepared maps from the company's archives add much to the coverage of each of these roads. Up-to-date (2005) locomotive rosters, promotional material, a bibliograpy, and a detailed index round out this history of the Vermont Rail System.
After reading this book, the reader undoubtedly will be very impressed with what the officers and employees of this organization have accomplished since the first train slowly made its way over the snow-covered line in early January 1964.
