The powerful electric engines of the red Glacier Express easily climb the snow-covered Swiss Alps. Ancient steam engines of the Guayaquil & Quito Railway labor up the slopes of the Andes in Ecuador. An express train of luxurious passenger carriages from another era ambles across the great western desert of China at dusk. A turbaned porter in a posture of formal greeting waits at the door of his sleeping car on the Palace on Wheels in Rajasthan, India. On the other side of the globe, the engineer of a sleek American Amtrak engine waves a casual hand out the window of his massive machine as it leaves the station.
There is a world of trains, and trains in turn have imposed their physical structures on the world. Wherever they go, there are tracks and stations, bridges and tunnels, signal towers and power lines. They fill space with their motion, color, and sound, and their clutter of signs and symbols is a universal language specifying time and place or conveying simple commands.
In 1993, photographer Graeme Outer-bridge set out to capture the look and feel of the world's trains and the impressions of form and color they leave everywhere. After five years of travel, including passage on the world's most glamorous express trains, he had amassed thousands of images revealing the universal visual language that the railroad has given to the world. From these, he has created Trains, a book that is as evocative to the imagination as a lonesome whistle in the night.
