Larry Rivers (1923-2002): As an Abstract Expressionist Larry Rivers was one of the first artists to break from the pure abstract movement and inject recognizable figurative subjects into his painting. He developed a fluid style between the two that combined blurred images with precise lines. He was born in New York City, and after studying music at the Julliard School, he became a painter. From 1947 to 1948, he studied with Hans Hofmann and William Baziotes and was very much a part of the leading-edge New York scene. He also designed stage sets including for plays by Frank O'Hara, and in 1957 began making welded steel sculpture. Andy Warhol never made it a secret that he was influenced by Rivers art, but in perhaps a more revealing quote from the book PopismWarhol recognizes Rivers unique persona as an influential ingredient in the development of Pop Art. Warhol said, "Larry's painting style was unique § it wasn't Abstract Expressionism and it wasn't Pop, it fell into the period in between. But his personality was very Pop." Adored by critics and collectors alike, Rivers artworks can be seen today in many museums world including MoMA and the Met.
