The White Plume is a 160-page pictorial presentation of the steam locomotive. It is dedicated to the entrepreneurs who designed, financed and built the railways; to the people who operate and maintain them; to the folks who travel on them; and to the customers who make use of them for the movement of goods and livestock.
For many railway enthusiasts - especially those who are photographers - the pall of black smoke is probably more dramatic than the white or grey plume of steam or smoke. But, to author Charles Bowman, this white plume symbolized the entire essence of the steam locomotive.
The White Plume is, very simply, a collection of photographs taken by Charles Bowman to permanently record his own fascination with the steam locomotive. The book is divided into five main sections: Canada and USA, England, Scotland, West Germany and Austria. Each photo was developed with painstaking personal care by the author, and the captions are Charles' own witty words.
The 160 photographs do not cover comprehensively any particular country, railway or region of a railway. Nor do they deal with particular types of locomotives or any specific class. The locations are varied, but seventeen informative maps included with the text will help you find your way.
The White Plume is Charles Bowman's first and only book. Shortly after he submitted the final text and photo selections to Railfare in 1974, he died. Charles had summed up his book in this single sentence: "There is but one unifying theme - steam, and its incredible fascination".
