FOREWORD
On the 18th March, 1961, Mr. E. S. Cox left London Airport to visit Johannesburg in South Africa, Bulawayo, Salisbury in Rhodesia and Nairobi and Mombassa in East Africa. The purpose of the tour was to meet Railway Engineers in these countries, see something of the conditions under which they were operating, and to read a paper entitled " British Railways' Experience with Diesel and Electric Traction ".
The tour was organised by the United Kingdom Railway Advisory Service with the full co-operation of the British Transport Commission, South African Railways, Rhodesia Railways, and East African Railways and Harbours.
This publication contains the text of Mr. Cox's Paper and a verbatim report of the discussion which followed its presentation at Witwatersrand University on the 22nd March, 1961. I trust the information contained in it will be of assistance to Railway Engineers in all parts of the world.
