In 1993, the soon-to-be-elected President of South Africa, NELSON R. MANDELA, was asked by South Africa's President F.W. de Klerk to visit Mexico, with the aim of establishing cordial relations with Mexico. Within a very short time, diplomatic relations were established between the two countries, with missions in Pretoria and Mexico City. Mandela and de Klerk shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for the peaceful change from "apartheid" to multiracial government.
