Lens hoods are used to prevent stray light from entering the lens by extending beyond and shading the front lens element. This is especially critical for light coming from an oblique angle. This light reflects off the external glass surface and multiple internal element surfaces creating “FLARE” that flattens overall image contrast, reduces color saturation and can produce unwanted circular artifacts. The image degradation that results can reduce or destroy your photo’s visual impact. Dedicated lens hoods are designed to provide optimal protection for a particular lens. Every lens needs a lens hood no matter where you shoot; indoors, outdoors or in the studio.
