Manufactured by CreoScitex, the VOLARE™ is a three-capture color imaging device usable on many medium and large format cameras using appropriate interface adapters. Three shots are required to produce a non-interpolated color image with a 14bit per pixel color depth (42 bit RGB). Black & white may be captured in a single exposure. Lighting may be studio flash or continuous lighting. The VOLARE™ carries a lever on the rear of the back to orient the sensor in either horizontal or vertical directions. The Leaf VOLARE™ was originally priced from Sinar-Bron in their 2000 catalog for $25,000. The LeafCapture software runs on a Macintosh computer. It has been tested to OSX version 10.4.11 on a silver Power Mac G4 using 1.5GB of ram. Several versions of LeafCapture are included along with the original camera personality files. Personality files are maps of the CCD’s pixels that used to mask imperfections in the captured image. The earliest version of the software is 5.2, the latest software version is 8.

About the LEAF VOLARE™:

The LEAF VOLARE™ digital camera back by CreoScitex is a 3-shot area array color capture camera designed for still life and commercial studio photography. It digitizes the subject without scanning, capturing images in an instant with a 2048 x 3096 pixel array (6 Mega-Pixels) producing a non-interpolated 36MB digital high dynamic range image. The entire CCD array is exposed, using studio flash, in as little as 1/1000th of a second per color (RGB) or using continuous light, it’s your choice. Black & white photos can be produced in a single exposure with or without filtration. The VOLARE™ mounts easily on many professional medium-format and large-format cameras using one of a wide variety of interface plates. The VOLARE™ software is implemented on an Apple Macintosh computer running OS X.

The VOLARE™ employs a thermo-electric cooling system that keeps the CCD at optimum temperature to reduce noise to virtually nonexistent levels. Patented anti-blooming technology helps eliminate highlight blooming and loss of detail. The VOLARE’s™ dynamic range is extremely wide, yielding a mind-boggling 11 f/stops and delivering more shadow detail than transparency film’s meager 7 f/stops. VOLARE™ digitizes an image at 14 bits per pixel per color. This fact enables original captures to be enlarged several hundred percent without degradation. LEAF’s VHtwist technology allows the photographer to rotate the 6-megapixel CCD sensor 90º for landscape or portrait orientation as necessary.

The LEAF VOLARE™ also features:

Live Preview - compose, focus and adjust lighting from the computer’s monitor

Live Focus - zoom in to ensure crisp focus of important subject detail

Digital Layout - match designer layout using an overlay capture superimposed on the LiveVideo screen

The Leaf VOLARE™ SinarCam Personality kit, Sinar catalog number 96-5090, consists of an adapter plate and interface cable to mount and use the Leaf VOLARE™ digital camera back on a Sinar SinarCam 1 digital camera body. The cable connects the VOLARE™ camera back and the SinarCam1 together allowing them to perform as a single unit. This configuration is necessary for implementation as a stand-alone DSLR or in the Sinar p2 4x5 configuration. The Personality Kit originally sold in the February 2000 Sinar Catalog for $2552.

If a digital back is the heart of a professional studio digital system, the Sinarcam 1 is the backbone. It performs all the functions necessary for the digital back to do it’s work. In the February 2000 edition of the Sinar Catalog the Sinarcam 1 wore a price tag of $9345. But to get one you had to buy it in a package of digital hardware that cost $34,345 and there were NO discounts available.

The Sinarcam 1 combines a digital adapter for the Sinar view camera system and a complete, compact digital studio camera in a single versatile unit. The focusing image can be viewed on the computer monitor as

a high-resolution live-video image of any desired size. In combination with the Leaf VOLARE™ digital back, the Sinarcam 1 becomes a high-grade digital studio camera for all kinds of still life images with flash, continuous, or mixed illumination.

Its universal adaptability features the possibility of quickly and easily converting the compact camera into a professional camera by attaching it to a Sinar p2 Camera. The adaptation principle of the Sinarcam permits the attachment of lenses from a great variety of manufacturers. In addition to the special Sinaron Digital lenses in DB mounts (with the Sinar p2 view camera), the Compact version of the camera can also be used with lenses from Nikon, Olympus, Leica R, Hasselblad and Mamiya 645.

This system sold originally for a price in a range between $27,000 and $30,000 without a lens. To put it into operation you will need a Nikon F mount lens of any generation and a Scitex PCI TAXI 2 Interface to Macintosh PCI bus card. You get all this awesome stuff for just a little more than the price of dirt…
