Note about hardness:  
Hardness is a measurement of how hard something is to scratch, it is not a measurement of toughness and nearly all gemstones, including diamonds, are brittle and can shatter. Gems are cut into delicate shapes with sharp points, so if any cut gem is dropped onto a hard surface or hit with a hammer it could shatter quite easily.
