INTRODUCTION
The name Brix has been associated with maritime business in the United States for more than a century. Since two Brix brothers purchased their first vessel in 1910, dozens of companies and hundreds of vessels have evolved under full or partial Brix ownership. Their stories flow through the current of America's maritime history.
Over the course of three generations, the Brix' maritime interest grew from a one-boat log-towing operation into one of the major transportation providers of the US Pacific coast and beyond. Its early wooden-hulled, steam-powered tugboats were replaced by steel-hulled vessels powered by diesel. Its first fleet of barges, each about 60 feet long, became larger and more versatile, measuring up to 425 feet, with capacities of up to 65,000 barrels of oil and 12,000 tons of dry cargo.
The heart of the Brix maritime business was Knappton Towboat Company, created in 1920 by P.J. Brix. During the Great Depression, the towboat company was one of the Brix' largest concerns that kept the family in business. By the time P.J. had passed it on to his son John in 1949, Knappton Towboat had a solid foundation. When John passed away in 1960, his son, Peter, took the helm and the company developed an even stronger presence as he pursued a steady course of mergers, acquisitions and improvements.
