Dean College is a private college in Franklin, Massachusetts. It grants associate degrees in 20 majors and bachelor's degrees in 13 majors.

Dr. Oliver Dean (1783–1871) was an American physician and philanthropist who founded Dean College in Franklin, Massachusetts. Dean was born in Franklin in 1783. He became a medical doctor and then changed careers and became manager of the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company in Manchester, New Hampshire. After retiring to Franklin, Dean founded a local Universalist church. In 1865, Dean founded the co-educational Dean Academy by donating $125,000 and approximately nine acres of land for the school, which was initially led by Arthur W. Peirce, known as "Awpie". Dean died in 1871.

John Stebbins Lee (1820-1902) was born in Vernon, Vermont and was educated at Amherst College, graduating in1841. He became a respected minister in the Universalist church and held teaching positions and pastorates in New Hampshire and Vermont. J.S. Lee married Elmina Bennett (d. 1903) in 1848. In 1859, he moved his young familyfrom Vermont to Canton, beginning teaching duties at the fledgling St. Lawrence University in Latin and Greek. Itwas during this time, through 1868, that J.S. Lee also took on administrative duties, making him the first President of the University. In 1868, he was granted a leave of absence for the purpose of travel and research. He traveled over 20,000 miles during this time through Europe, North Africa and the Holy Land. Following his return to Canton, Dr. Lee resumed teaching in Ecclesiastical History and Biblical Archeology at the Theological School for many years. He also wrote two books based on his travels, Nature and Art in the Old World, or Sketches of Travel in Europe and the Orient, and Sacred Cities: Narrative, Descriptive, Historical. Throughout his life, J.S. Lee was active in the Universalist ministry, preaching in local churches and various churches during his travels throughout New England.
