This lovely small medal features a closeup of St Sebastian with the inscription in Italian "Santo Martiri Sebastiano" (Holy Martyr Sebastian). The reverse translates as "In Memory of the Catacombs of St Sebastian - Rome".

St Sebastian was a a captain in the praetorian guard under both the Emperor Constantine and the Emperor Maximian. Neither emperor knew that Sebastian was secretly a Christian. When Maximian ordered the persecution of Christians, Sebastian was exposed for his beliefs. The emperor immediately had him tied to a tree, shot full of arrows, and left him there for dead. St Irene of Rome found him and nursed him back to health. Once he was well, Sebastian returned to Maximian and denounced him for his treatment of Christians. He was finally martyred when he was beaten to death on Maximian's orders.

The medal was cast in sterling silver from an antique medal in the Rosa Mystica Collection so it shows all the beauty and history of the original piece. It comes with a matching holy card in an organza gift bag, ready for gift-giving, and was made in the USA.
