PREVIEW:
All concerned adults wonder what role competition should--or shouldn't--play in the life of a child. They also wonder how much a parent should do to influence a child in this regard. Dr. Stella Chess, professor of child psychology at New York University Medical Center, has some lively views on the subject of competition that we thought you might like to hear about. Our staff, a clamorous bunch of non-expert psychologists, reacted to her words with more "amens" than 'ughs", and a few side bets are riding on our readers' reactions. The story's on page 12. . . . Gerry Speedy, our director of program development, is a one-man Hoover commission when it comes to ferreting out facts about our young people. He is death on clichés and the listless notion that our kids are all going to pot. His article, "What Is Our Attitude Toward Today's Youth" begins on the next page. - . . Scouts have a big investment in their camps that serve as vacation spots where they can try their outdoor skills away 1 from the whir of city life. More and more of them are becoming conservation minded, hacking down dead trees, planting new ones, clearing drainage ditches and dressing up nature trails that have been run down from a lot of use., They even bring along their own rock groups to keep things swinging. "Conserving Camp Kaufman" on page 10 is the story of one such camporee. . . - The Idaho Fish and Game Department has given a big boost to Exploring by sponsoring posts all over the state. They and the Explorers share a common interest: conservation. "Snakes, Ticks, and Hot Feet" tells about Post 307 and its bustling group of young men. The story is on page 30. . - . Cub Scout day camps are popping up all over the country. A report on the how and why of it all, is on page 6. - . - The crow is a mighty crafty fellow, misunderstood by most of us as a black demon. Plain as paint, he's an easy target for his ill wishers, who've gone after him with guns, poison, electronic gee-gaws and whatnot. Yet this prankster, a friend of man, stays alive because of his wit. Jack Denton Scott did the story--"Something to Crow About--on page 32.
