GJPaw Auctions is pleased to offer a rare, unusual and gorgeously weathered wood equestrian horse, from Thailand. Since pre-historic times, horses have played a major role in Asian civilizations. They were common across the entire continent, where they were bred, traded and used for various tasks, which depending on the region, included transport, military and agricultural. In flat regions horses were bred for their larger stature while in mountainous regions they were smaller and more robust. Thai equestrian history stems from the cavalry who still have their own competitions. This stunningly beautiful wood sculptured horse is shown wearing tackle representative of an equestrian horse, together with all the physical gestures of this stately sporting animal. The sculpture is carved from Tenasserim pine wood, a stately and the most tropical of all the pines known for its height, durability and strength. It measures 29.5 inches in width by 7.5 inches in depth by 35.75 inches in height (74.9 cm by 19.0 cm by 90.8 cm). This statue was once painted, but over time not only has the paint faded, its features and patina have also become scarred by the ravages of time and use. The wear, however, is consistent with a dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. Wonderfully evocative of a Thailand marveled for culture, decay and timelessness, these pieces have now unfortunately all but disappeared and have become highly sought after by collectors. It would make a superb addition to any collection of Asian antiques.
