Henri-Edmond Cross (1856-1910)

Peu connu du grand public mais admiré à son époque par tout un cercle intellectuel et artistique, Henri-Edmond Cross fit partie du groupe néoimpressionniste et de son peintre phare Georges Seurat. Cross découvre la Cité des Doges en juillet 1903. Il sillonne la ville et sa lagune avec pour unique bagage un carnet de croquis et des aquarelles. Il rapportera de son séjour à Venise de sublimes aquarelles, fluides et vibrantes, aux couleurs presque fauves.

Henri-Edmond Cross, little known to the general public, but admired in his day by an entire intellectual and artistic circle, was part of the group of neoimpressionists and its flagship painter Georges Seurat. Cross discovered the city of the Doges in July 1903. He wandered across the town and its lagoon, carrying only a sketch-book and his watercolours. He brought back from his stay in Venice marvellous, fluid and vibrant watercolours with tones that are almost fauve.
