Composite Decking Starter Clips - Composite Decking - Tough Decking

Starter Clips

From start to finish, composite decking should ideally be fixed into position with either our choice of T-Piece expansion clips or our Starter clips.

The starter clips aid the fixing of the first and possibly last deck run across the joists. Unlike our selection of T clips, the starter clips are L-shaped, designed to fit down one side of our composite boards fitted tightly in the rebated groove.

As the starter clips are fixed to your joists before the boards are laid, they are perfect when working away from a wall or doorway, as the board rebated edge can be then slid into the clip. This makes it a far better and more professional option than a hidden screw commonly used. Importantly, they will hold back the decking boards, when expansion and contraction come into play.

The starter clips are also great to be used on step areas, in conjunction with our Active + or Woodsman + composite boards. The clips can be used on the bottom of each 'riser' board, holding the suspended board to the joist, removing the need for a hidden screw.

It is recommended that either a long narrow Phillips screwdriver or PZ2 an extension drill bit is used when fixing the boards and clips into position.
WPC & Stainless Steel Clips For WPC Decking - Tough Decking, Torquay

WPC Fixings and Clips

Tough Decking offers both premium stainless T-clips and starter clips as well as cheaper plastic T-clips.

The T-Clips play a vital role in holding the decking into position and controlling the expansion and contraction of the boards. When the joists and clips are fitted correctly, there is minimal to no movement of the boards.

All clips are supplied with a stainless screw and can be fixed to either a timber or composite joist.

Each Clip when installed, spaces the boards evenly and consistently. Not only do they minimise the expansion and contraction throughout the months, but they also allow the drainage of surface water from the decked area.

Our plastic T-Clips offers a 5mm expansion gap between the boards, whereas our stainless clips offer a 6mm gap respectively. All our clips (including the starter clips) are easy to use and can be fixed to the joists with a screwdriver or handheld power drill (non-impact driver).

It is recommended that either a long narrow Phillips screwdriver or PZ2 extension drill bit is used when fixing the boards and clips into position.
Composite Decking Step Nosing

Composite Step Nosing Board

Used To Create The Perfect Integrated Step Finish. Designed to be used in conjunction with our Active +or Woodsman +boards.

With a board fitted on either side of the Step Nosing, this will create a 300mm depth step/tread and 200mm riser/height of the step.

Offers a professional look in commercial and domestic decked areas, guaranteed against peeling, bubbling or delamination, like the composite boards.

The Step Nose board is effectively a composite board shaped like an L shape. It is fitted the same way as the composite boards. The Plastic or Stainless T clips should be used on either side of the step nose, integrating it into the composite boards.

The Step Nosing can also be used as an alternative to the L Profile or fascia skirting. This product is certainly the recommendation if the decked area is to be joined to a composite cladding area. The Step Nosing offers a smooth transition from the horizontal decked area to the vertical cladding area (see pic).

It is recommended that either a long narrow Phillips screwdriver or PZ2 extension drill bit is used when fixing the boards and clips into position.
Composite Decking Corner Trims

Composite Decking Corner Trim / L Profile Edging

Tough Decking corner trims offers a fantastically clean and professional finish to the decked area. Its main purpose is to be used as a finishing edge or to highlight a small step down.

Formed from the same high-grade composite materials as the composite decking, they can be used on both commercial and domestic deck areas.

Available in 4 colours, the L Profile edging can be used to compliment and finalise the decked area. Designed against fading and degradation, our profiles and fascia skirts have anti-mildew properties built into the product itself.

The trims look fantastic when fitted, the perfect solution when concealing untidy corners, cuts, or angles. Easy to cut and work with, they are installed the same way as conventional wood edging, either glued or screwed down into position.

Like the decking, the L profile trims come in 2.2m lengths. The externally measures 37mm x 68mm and are 6mm in thickness.  To counter issues with expansion and contraction, the edging trim should be fitted 2-3 weeks after the decking has been installed.

Composite Decking fascia

Composite Decking Skirting / Fascias

The composite decking skirts/fascias complete any edge and provide the decked area with a more professional and clean look. They are predominantly used on the side of the decking to cover the joists, but can also be used as fascias to wrap around the deck.

Formed from the same high-grade composite materials as the composite decking, they can be used on both commercial and domestic deck areas.

Available in 4 colours, the skirting can be used to compliment and finalise the decked area. Designed against fading and degradation, our profiles and fascia skirts have anti-mildew properties built into the product itself.

Easy to cut and work with, they are installed the same way as conventional wood edging, either glued or screwed down into position.

Like the decking, the fascia skirts come in 2.2m lengths. The external dimensions are 11mm in width and 11mm in thickness. To counter issues with expansion and contraction, the edging trim should be fitted 2-3 weeks after the decking has been installed.

Composite Decking joists

Composite Decking Joists

The composite alternative to timber joists. Because the composite joists are low profile, they are designed to be laid directly onto a solid concrete base, concrete haunches, or paving.

They will not rot or deteriorate like wood. This means when laid flat over the ground or flat roof, supporting pillars/legs are not required. Please note they cannot be suspended like timber joists.

Compatible with our Active +or Woodsman +, we can also provide joist concrete screws, that do not require a plug before being fixed. It is recommended a minimum of 5 screws per joist. These would not be required on a flat roof. To maintain watertight integrity, the joists would be laid 'floating' or glued down.

Like the decking boards and trims, the joists come in 2.2m lengths. The joist height is only 30mm, with the width being 54mm. Each joist has a drainage channel running down the centre of the joist.

The joists are constructed from the same high-grade composite as the composite boards and edgings.

Composite Joist Expansion Screws For WPC Decking - Tough Decking, Torquay

Joist Expansion Screws / Concrete Frame Screws

The joist screws are compatible with our low-profile composite joists. They can hold the joists into position without the need for washers or plugs.

It is recommended a minimum of 5 screws per joist. The screws are a countersunk self-tapping anchor, for use on concrete and masonry substrates only. The screw length is 80mm with a 7.5mm countersunk T30 Torx drive head. A 6mm pilot hole (through the joist and concrete) should always be done before the joist is screwed down.

The undercutting action of the screw provides a solid fixing without the need for expansion. This means the screws can be close to an edge. Please note, we recommend the screws should be installed no closer than 100mm from the end of each joist.

Our joist expansion screws are supplied in packs of 10.

COMPOSITE DECKING BOARDS ACTIVE+ and WOODSMAN+

Tough Decking commercial grade decking boards provides a fantastically clean & professional finish to any deck area. If you are looking to transform your garden or outdoor space, then our Tough Decking composite boards are the perfect choice for you.

Formed from 60% plastic and 40% recycled wood, the composite decking boards are uniquely uncapped. They will not rot, decay, warp, or splinter, unlike the majority of lower-quality composite boards on the market.

Designed against fading, our durable composite boards have anti-mildew properties built into the product itself. They are also anti-slip, providing even more grip in the wet. We are so confident in the quality of all composite full-body products, that we offer a 15-year warranty on all decking and ancillary products.

Our composite boards have full body colour running through the product. Unlike wood decking, minor scratches or scraps, caused by heavy garden furniture or household pets, can be easily sanded out, whilst maintaining the original colour of the decking. Tough Decking is the perfect alternative to standard wood decking but with all the benefits of being a composite material.

REVERSIBLE DECKING

For variety, we offer a different option of tread on each side of the Tough Decking boards. The boards provide you with a choice of attractive, but tough, anti-slip surfaces, offering even more grip when wet! We also offer the popular and unique step nose board, which you can use to form your steps or to meet any cladding that joins the decking. The stepped nose will provide an integrated and smooth transition on any corner and is what sets us apart from our competitors.

LOW MAINTENANCE

Tough Deck boards are easy to maintain, with anti-mildew properties built into the product. Tough Deck products require virtually no maintenance and are very easy to clean. All our fixing and starter clips are surface hidden to provide a high-end flawless finish.

All our options of clips are fixed directly to the supporting joists. When fitted between the boards, this controls the expansion and contraction of the composite boards (a minimum of 8 per board is, recommended). Both our options of boards are suitable for commercial or domestic installs. Our competitive prices and our customer service! Will not be beaten.

Composite Decking Fitting Instructions

Before fitting composite decking the material should be left for a minimum of 24 hours in the area it is to be fitted. The decking will expand and contract slightly in different weather conditions. The surface colour will also fade slightly, (more so on light colours) but this will stabilize after the first 6 months. Composite decking can be worked with normal woodworking tools. A hand saw or chop saw is ideal for cutting the boards and joists to length.

1: Supporting Substructure

The composite decking must not be laid directly on the subfloor. Decking must be fixed to composite joists if installed over a flat solid sub-surface. If the decking needs to be raised then a timber frame can be installed first.

The supporting base must be installed with a slight fall, (minimum 1/30) and ideally away from the property. The water must be able to run along and down the length of the decking boards so it can drain off the ends. All supporting Joists should be installed in parallel lines at 90 degrees to the decking. All joists should be installed at even centres. A tough deck requires 6 joists per 2.2m lengths plus the final joist which equates to, (Tough deck for Domestic areas 370mm centres | Commercial areas 314mm centres).

If using composite joists, these should be fixed directly to a solid base using expansion joist screws or concrete haunches. Joists must be fixed in parallel lines with a 10mm spacing at either end of each joist.

2: Fixing Decking Boards To Composite or Wood Joists

Starter and T-piece decking clips should be used to hold the decking boards in place. Alternatively, boards can be screwed down through the deck surface making sure to maintain an even 6mm gap between all boards. All decking joints should also be staggered.

Starter Clips are used to start the decking installation process & finish/lock the end planks into position.

T-Clips are used between each decking board. Step two above shows a T-Clip being installed by offering each clip up to the decking boards and screwing in place with the stainless steel screw provided. The next decking board can then be slid up and tapped into position before repeating the process.

The diagram on the right shows how a T-clip can also be slid between two decking boards and using a thin driver head, be screwed down to hold both board sides at once. All decking board ends and sides must all be fully supported and fixed down with starter clips or T-clips. All sides must be fixed down to each supporting joist. If the decking is screwed down, a suitable stainless steel counter sunk screw must be used on both sides and ends of each board into all supporting joists

T-Clips are designed to space the decking boards regularly but also allow for a small margin of expansion and contraction. All board ends must be fixed down and fully supported by a joist, (deck board ends should not overhang by more than 30mm at any point). Were two board ends meet two joists and four clips will be required, one joist and two clips for each board end, (do not use one T-clip to bridge two board ends). A 10mm gap must be left between the end of the boards and any solid surface. Between boards Leave a 6mm gap to allow for expansion and contraction.

3: Edges / Trims / Finishing

Once all boards have been fixed in place, any uneven edges, exposed joists, or step nosings can be finished using our composite skirting and L profiles.

Skirting and L profiles can either be screwed or glued in place depending upon the fitting location. All our composite decking, trims, and profiles are full-bodied meaning the colour runs through the material from top to bottom. This allows the material to be sanded to remove damage or refine any miss-cut edges or corners.

DO:

  • Follow the installation instructions.
  • Allow the decking 24 hours to acclimatise.
  • Take weather conditions into account when allowing for expansion and contraction gaps.
  • Install the decking with a fall along the length of the boards.
  • Fully support and fix down all board ends with two fixings and one joist per end, (Double joist all joints).
  • Keep decking clean and wash regularly for the first month with light detergent and rinse with fresh water.
  • Support and fix down all board ends directly to supporting joists.
  • Stagger all end joints.
  • Sand down any roughly cut edges with sandpaper.
  • Always make a pilot hole when screwing into any WPC material.

DON'T:

  • Do not lay waterproof or airtight mats, covers or other flat objects directly onto the decking.
  • Forget the decking will expand and contract so leave an appropriate gap at end of all boards.
  • Lay/install the decking laying directly onto the subfloor.
  • Install the decking completely flat.
  • Install the decking on an uneven surface.
  • Exceed the stated support frame centres.
  • Power wash the decking above 30 Bar.
  • Do not block the ends of the boards.
  • Do not heat the surface, middle or underside of the boards.

About Tough Decking

Tough Decking has been supplying and installing composite decking for over 10 years. As we have got busier through the years, we have now become suppliers only of the product. We know how composite decking should be installed and from experience, know what size boards work when expansion and contraction from the weather come into play. Importantly, that is why we only supply 2.2 linear metre boards, as longer boards from tested experience, are unstable and hard to 'hold back' or control in varying temperatures. The 2.2m board, encourages more joist supports and a staggered joint (brick effect).
