This lovely small French medal shows St Bridget of Sweden with a pilgrim’s staff and holding a church.  The pilgrim’s staff represents her pilgrimage to Rome and the church is from a vision when God gave her instructions on how to build her abbey church for her order of nuns.  On the bottom left edge of the medal has France engraved which let’s us know that the medal is from France.

St Bridget was born in 1302 and raised by a wealthy Christian family in Sweden. She married a nobleman at age 13 and went on to have 8 children. She was a lady-in-waiting to Queen Blanche and used her position to counsel the queen and King Magnus to be guided by Christ in their positions. After her husband died she became a religious and received many visions, her most famous one being a vision of the birth of Christ. She was ridiculed and isolated for deciding to leave her position at court but pursued her dream of being a nun and eventually founded the Bridgettine Order in 1346. She went on pilgrimage to Rome and stayed there to council Popes Clement VI, Gregory XI, and Urban VI. She died in Rome in 1374 and was buried at her convent in Sweden.

St Bridget is the patron of widows.
