Molchansky monastery-fortress is the most famous attraction in the Sumy region. The first mention of the castle date back to the 16th century, although, presumably, as a defensive structure, it could be built for a few centuries earlier. According to the testimony of archival documents in the 16th century, the building was constructed of durable stone, not wood like most fortresses in Russia.
Beginning with 1592, the area of strengthening the monks began to settle, which works within a hexagonal fortress was built Orthodox church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A little later, the monks who lived here took the entire citadel.
His great fame Molchansky monastery-fortress acquired after a period of "the Troubles", when the whole state battles were fought in the reign of Boris Godunov and between the named son of Ivan the Terrible Falsdmitry. It was he who took the fortress in Putivle at your own residence. By the time Molchansky monastery and villages around it were one of the most prosperous, here gathered merchants from far and near settlements. After the 16th century, a similar rise Putivel not repeated. During the revolutions of the 20th century monastic complex of destruction reached unbelievable proportions, and only to the 1990s, thanks to the renovations managed to regain its former fortress and the magnificent view.
Today Molchansky monastery-fortress is a place of pilgrimage for the world as a religious center and a cultural monument. Architecture convent renovated in the style of classic Ukrainian baroque, and inside the complex ongoing restoration work.
