UNIQUE & RARE ITEM ADDRESSED TO THE CHIEF MAGISTRATE

This envelope of Pitcairn's postal and social history was printed by the New Zealand Government Printer in 1946 (imprint at upper right), as were all of Pitcairn's Official stationery, including those for use in the Pitcairn Post Office. It is 150mm x 90mm in size, and only 400 were printed.

Apart from a reference by Kitching (type 18-17), there appear to be no others in existence, and it has rarely been offered for sale. Kitching refers to this envelope as a "Telegraph Envelope", and notes " ... used for telegrams from the "Pitcairn Island Wireless Station" (so-called) and is circa 1950."

A ship which intended to call at Pitcairn in a day or two sent a radio telegram to the island. Pitcairn's Radio Operator made a copy, folded it into a Telegram envelope, and addressed it to the Chief Magistrate. It was delivered unsealed, thus the perfect original gum inside the flap.

One duty of the Chief Magistrate - either Norris Young (1945-1948), or Parkin Christian (1949-1950) at this time - was to give the community notice of the impending ship visit, so that islanders could complete handicrafts for sale on the ship, collect fruits for bartering or sale, and the Postmaster and his staff could have a supply of stamps and cancellers ready for sale to passengers or crew as a momento of their visit to Pitcairn.

This envelope is in absolutely unblemished condition - no rips, tears, folds, or age marks, and may be unique. It is unrecorded elsewhere.
