The Ugly Truth about Cheap, Off-Brand Performance Camshafts

The Internet can be an amazing resource for engine professionals and consumers. It can also be a cesspool of dangerously low-quality parts marketed by less-than-reputable suppliers.

Elgin Industries recently performed a comprehensive analysis of a number of bargain-basement-priced performance camshafts offered by Chinese suppliers.  Here’s what we found:

Product:              ‘Sloppy Stage 2’ E-1840-P (China knock-off)

Key findings:     Inconsistent (at times non-existent) heat-treat on lobes & journals

Risks:  Increased wear, metal shavings in oil

                             Poor lobe & journal machining

Risks:  Significant lifter chatter, unwanted harmonics, potential catastrophic failure

Incorrect timing

Risks: Unpredictable performance, possible inoperable engine
