                        MAIDEN VISIT OF M.S. ROYAL VIKING SEA TO PITCAIRN ISLAND

                     The envelope is correctly rated $1.30 for sea, then air, delivery to South Africa.

 "1988 Feb 12 - Kloster Cruise A/S's passenger ship Royal Viking Sea of Oslo, 26,018 tons, Captain Haakon Gangdal, from Easter Island,  bound for Tahiti. The ship stops for four hours, and gives gifts of plywood, mattresses, carpeting and tinned meat to the Islanders." -quoted from Dr Herbert Ford's book, "PITCAIRN -- PORT OF CALL" (1st edition - 1996).

The writer, in Stateroom 235, states, in part, "We drop anchor 7am today off the island due to lack of a deepwater harbour ..." and later, "on the occasion of the R.V. Sea maiden visit ..."  The letter was handed to the Pitcairn postmaster, who had come aboard that morning armed with stamps, and other miscellaneous items for sale. Back in the post office, the mail was prepared for collection by the next ship and postmarked with the small circular datestamp (Kitching type 2.11).

In addition to the stamps (part of the 1987 "Nineteenth Century Paintings" issue), there is a notation "MAIDEN VISIT" at the upper left corner. The reverse is blank.
