Eric Clapton’s 1939 Martin 000-42
In January 1992 Eric Clapton performed an acoustic set in front of a small audience which was recorded for MTV Unplugged. The resulting album was awarded six Grammy’s and has sold 26 million copies.
Eric chose to play his 1939 Martin 000-42, serial number 73234 on several songs during that famous session, including a slow version of Layla which brought smaller acoustic guitars into the spotlight.
This is one of 113 pre–World War II Martin 000-42 short-scale guitars with a 14-fret neck which was designed with a shorter body for players to easily access all the frets.
Achieving $791,500 at auction in 2004, it is the highest price ever paid for an acoustic guitar.

The illustration of this famous guitar is original and has been produced by George Morgan following extensive research.
