Art Deco Silver Demitasse Spoons - Bernard Cuzner Design for Liberty & Co - Birmingham 1947

~Welcome to my auction for this nice quality cased set of Art Deco demitasse / coffee spoons~

This is a nice quality set of Art Deco styled, sterling silver 'demitasse' or coffee spoons.
Each spoon carries full U.K. hallmarks for Birmingham 1947, with the silversmith mark being for Roberts & Dore, who are actually based in Hatton Garden, London.

1947 is late for the Art Deco styling that these spoon exhibit, but it must of been a popular design, and in fact the design of these pieces has an interesting history.

These were actually originally designed by the famous arts & crafts silversmith, Bernard Cuzner for the London department store, Liberty & Co.
According to the original Liberty pattern books, the pattern number is 3208.
I don't know when it was originally designed, but the dates I've personally seen are from the early 1930's.
This is the third set of spoons I've had in this pattern, and all three were manufactured by different silversmiths - it's likely they were made under license from Liberty & Co, as they held the rights to the designs.
Interestingly, Roberts & Dore, the maker of these spoons, actually supplied silverware to the top London stores in the mid 20th century and earlier, so perhaps Liberty & Co actually retailed these.
In pictured 9,10,11 and 12 show images taken from Simon Moore's specialist book, Artists' Spoons & Related Table Cutlery - here you can see pictures from the original design sketchbooks.

The spoons are of delicate form, with small egg shaped bowl, and narrow stems leading to a pointed terminal.
A quarter of the way up the stem from the bowl is a there is a small waisted section, which is typical of a Cuzner spoon.
The terminal area has a punched design, which appear to be stylised plants or flower heads.

The 6 spoons are identical in form and are house in their original leatherette case.

Each spoon measures approximately 10cm in length, and the total weight of silver is 53.2g.

The condition all round of the spoons is excellent and they have clear hallmarks - they are free of any damage or repairs.
The case is in good solid condition and shows only light wear to the exterior.

This is a great value set for a collector of Bernard Cuzner's designs - it goes without saying that if you can find a set of these spoons hallmarked to Liberty & Co, the price would be significantly more, and if you were able to find a set that had Cuzner's own makers mark, it would carry a higher premium again.

Please study the images provided to satisfy yourself as to the condition of the item offered - if you have any further questions please ask and I'll be happy to oblige.
