Famous Bass Guitars from left to right

Named after the frets that allow musicians to hit precise notes, the design of Leo Fender’s early Precision Bass allowed a new way of playing. First advertised as a portable string bass which can be carried as easily as a guitar, Fender’s Precision Bass is fretted, includes an electric pickup and due to the solid body it could be amplified, giving it a new level of presence. Playing a Precision Bass since the late sixties, Sting has owned his 1957 model for over a quarter of a century.

Lemmy’s 4004 Rickenbastard uses three pickups and is finished with chequered binding, star inlays, gold hardware, chicken head knobs fitted to a hand carved walnut body of relief oak leaves and acorns and a custom head nameplate. The Pickup cover was added as a hand rest.

This 1958 Sunburst Fender Precision Bass with maple neck and gold aluminium pickguard was used by Duck Dunn throughout his time with Booker T & the MG’s, the house band at Stax Records through the 60’s.

Purchased in 1964 this Rickenbacker RM1999 became Chris Squire’s most used bass. He rewired it to produce a split stereo output, each pickup going to different amplifiers.

Phil Lynott used two black Fender Precision Basses during his time fronting Thin Lizzy. This one uses DiMarzio pickups, a mirror pickguard and a rosewood fingerboard.
