Narrow gauge trains intrude a little later into the life of the railbuff-traveller. One starts off with the local railroad and Christmas models. At some point, however, the rail-minded individual discovers a whole universe of activity beyond his immediate environment and even extending to distant shores. Sophistication in these matters sometimes comes by leaps and bounds.
The steam engine buffs "pilgrim's progress" must inevitably lead to Colorado, where delights await beneath the towering mountains. Colorado is the Mecca, the Jerusalem, the Rome, the Benares for the true believer in the railroad way.
Happily, writing about railroads, not just the narrow gauge kind, has grown and flowered over the past several years. It was perhaps Lucius Beebe and Charles Clegg of extravagant vocabulary who led the way. Early railfan literature, such as Historical Society Bulletins, were couched in engineer's precise diction, but the magazines Trains and Railfan brightfully assisted the advance of excellent writing about trains. Linwood Moody, Mac Poor, Ross Grenard, Jackson Thode, Bob Richardson, Mal Ferrell and others have lent their talents to poetical prose about mountain railways.
In this volume we start our tour with a visit to the Rio Grande Southern, that utter Calcutta of strait gauges, and follow a path through exciting corners of the world. An observation must be made. All too few of us now living remember the days when narrow gauge ran "in the wild," so to speak, but today's observers have a tremendous advantage. In place of uncertain schedules are timetabled trains. Instead of frightful side road villages with appalling accommodations are resort areas where all members including the photographer and his wife can find comfortable rest and relaxation within sound of a steam whistle. At many a train site, the most breathtaking bridges, rivers, engine sheds and verdant forests are not only incidental but an objective of the recreation railway. Additionally, one enjoys the satisfaction of knowing that each ticket or book purchase adds to the strength and to the targeted plans of the organization, whether public or private.
Steam is up. Purchase your ticket. Fasten your hat and bandanna against the soot and sparks. We have many miles to go.
