Esquivel was one of the most interesting easy listening composers of the 1950s and ’60s, creating open, futuristic sonic landscapes. Part of his music’s appeal is its pure campiness; “Mucha Muchacha,” with its bad puns and exaggerated Latin rhythms and vocals, is hilarious. Esquivel!, a collection of his “greatest hits,” makes it apparent that the humor is at least partially intentional. Using dissonance and aural humor, along with intricately structured arrangements, Esquivel created records that were indeed “space age bachelor pad music” -- they sounded out of this world and they swung. The music may sound dated, but it also sounds peculiarly fresh; no one made music like this then, and no one makes music like this now.

Orchestral recordings by Juan Garcia Esquivel 1958-1968 originally released on RCA Victor.
