Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd (ICI) had thousands of employees, many of whom got long service award Garrard watches. This is a fine example of just such a watch.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the presentation engraving on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being awarded in 1960 to J. Edmondson, for 20 years service from Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd. As the watch hands contain radium lume the watch was likely made before 1955.
CONDITION
Garrard is the longest serving jewellers in the world, and can trace their history back to 1735. Quality as always been high – they were appointed the first official Crown Jeweller in 1843, and even now the engagement ring worn by the Duchess of Cambridge was made by them. This watch is a more standard affair, but the quality is still there. The stainless steel case has a screw down case back to protect the movement. The movement is a Garrard stamped AS1430, which has seventeen jewels and is very clean. This may be because it retains the dust cover that is so often missing. It is running well. The lugs are drilled in order to make strap changes easier. The dial does have some marks.
