They had rounded backs, short front limbs, long rear limbs, and tails 

carried high in the air. They were huge, strongly built, herbivorous 

quadrupeds. One of the most iconic dinosaur species is the Stegosaurus, 

which is distinguished by its broad, upright plates and spiked tail. Scientists 

have long conjectured about the purpose of this arrangement of plates and 

spikes. Nowadays, it is generally accepted that their spiked tails were 

probably employed to protect them from predators, whilst their plates may 

have served initially as ornaments and secondly as thermoregulatory 

devices. The brain-to-body mass ratio of the Stegosaurus was quite low. 

Its small head and short neck suggest that it likely consumed low-lying plants and shrubs.
