BioBalls provide biological filtration in aquariums, koi ponds, and water gardens. The surface area contained in their 1.5" diameter is unparalleled, even outranking Matala. BioBalls are commonly put inside mesh bags and placed in waterfall bio-filters.

Organic debris becomes trapped in the Bio Balls, allowing beneficial bacteria to colonize. Feeding on the same nutrients as cellular algae or "pea soup" algae, the beneficial bacteria outcompete the algae, leading to clearer water.
