VISIT OF HADAG CRUISE SHIP "ASTOR"

The Cruise : The German HADAG Liner, M.S. ASTOR, was on it's final cruise from Cape Town, South Africa, to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 10 to 19 JANUARY 1984. On 14 January, she stopped for a day at "The Lonely Isle", TRISTAN DA CUNHA. This was the last cruise of this vessel under Kapitan Kreuger. The ship had been sold to the South African Cruise Line, SAFMARINE.
After disembarking her passengers in Rio de Janeiro on 19 January, the empty ASTOR was sailed by a skeleton crew to Hamburg, her home port. There she was refitted, lengthened, and repainted in her new SAFMARINE / SAFLEISURE colors, and sailed back to Cape Town to start her new career cruising in southern waters.
The Cover : Printed ship stationery, available on board, with imprint on flap printed in black ink. The unstamped cover received a Rio de Janeiro Pitney Bowes meter mail arrival postmark on 19 January 1984. The Shipping Company's 35mm diameter German seamail double ring postmark DEUTSCHE SCHIFFSPOST * KREUZFAHRT * between the rings, and MS ASTOR / 14. -1. 84 / HADAG-CRUISE-LINE was mailed at the Purser's Office on arrival at Tristan.
