In view is a somewhat enigmatic large format process lens made by Carl Zeiss Jena in the post-World War II period between 1949 to 1952 based on it’s serial number and available online resources. The lens is a Carl Zeiss Jena Apo-Tessar 45cm f/9 process lens in barrel design. Optically the lens is in excellent condition showing no abrasions in the the glass. Internal dust and the inclusions that are present in all vintage lenses are visible. The barrel and flange mount show the normal signs of use but for a lens that’s seen over 65 years of service it looks amazing. The nineteen (19) bladed diaphragm performs smoothly and provides a near perfect circle at all settings. The diaphragm control ring moves freely. The lens coating shows lights marks that will not affect image quality. The flange threads are in excellent condition allowing normal rotation for lens mounting and removal.
Process lenses are designed for the graphics industry. Flat-field lenses, they are optimized for copy photography at a 1:1 or greater reproduction scale. Many process lenses make excellent shooting lenses. Obviously ideal for macro shooting, they are useful for coping flat, two dimensional objects like paintings, stamps, coins, currency and photographs. They are excellent for field applications when sufficiently stopped down. They easily fit into large format systems by mounting them in shutters or even using them without one.
Apo-Tessars were originally built like regular Tessars using four elements in three groups, but used a special glass with abnormal dispersion referred to as 'short flint’, or “KF” in Schott glass nomenclature. They are optimized for high definition over a smaller field of view than regular Tessars, covering a 43º field at a maximum opening of f/9, or less in some focal lengths. The coverage may be higher for the less stringent demands of pictorial use. The optimum aperture setting is f/22. The thread in front of the front element is not designed for filter use but for reversing the front element for use at magnifications greater than life-size (1:1) and is optimized for up to 3:1 magnifications.
