This book tells the story of five of our railways before The Ministry of Transport Railways Act of 1921 came into force on New Year's Day 1923.
It is complementary to the several recent and excellent locomotive books and also to various articles which appear from time to time in the railway journals: it fills in the background with a connected narrative and it places each event in its proper perspective and position.
There are no modern books on this subject, and all previous works are out of print.
Time story of the eleven remaining railways, as detailed in the table of contents, will be told in two subsequent and similar books which are now in course of preparation. The make-up and layout will be consistent, so that the three components will form one comprehensive whole.
