Comment - The Dobson Encyclopedia was a slight variation of the Third Edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica, which was published in England. Mr. Dobson was upset at some of the selected British subject matter as not including American values. Thus, he obtained a set of the Britannica third edition and slightly revised it to include more United States patriotic information, for the American reader, and slowly published his own version of the encyclopedia. Actually, it contained perhaps 98 percent of the original subject matter. About 2000 copies were printed originally (per information from Christie’s Auction House), using hand-laid paper (a very few illustration plates were on woven paper). Just prior to 1820 he sold out the original printing, so a few more copies were printed, using woven paper. The Encyclopedia included 18 volumes published in 1798, plus 3 supplemental volumes published in 1803 also using hand-laid paper.  This edition was the very first encyclopedia ever published and printed in the newly-formed United States.
