Beautiful pair of Silver Plated Wine Bottle
Coasters by Elkington & Co. of Sheffield. The Coasters have a criss-cross
open basket style surround with a central vacant boss (unengraved) in the
turned walnut base. The rim has detailed bunches of grapes and vine leaves.
Elkington & Co. are one of the most important names in English Silver and
certainly the most important in Silver Plate. George and Henry Elkington were
awarded the first patents for electroplating in 1840 and they founded the
electroplating industry in Birmingham which spread around the world. They
exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 at the Crystal Palace with enormous
success.
The Coasters bear the early Elkington marks of E & Co., crowned and in a
shield and on one the date letter N for 1852 and on the other the date letter P
for 1854 as shown.

Weight: 560g. each – total 1120 g.
Condition: Very good. The green coloured baize on the bottom is faded and worn
with age. The walnut is clean and in very good condition and the silver plate
shows no sign of loss.
