Native Rosella Hibiscus
(Hibiscus subdariffa)
An excellent bush tucker and an asset to any garden.
This fast growing shrub produces an abundance of flowers and edible fruits, attracting many native birds and insects to the garden. It is particularly attractive to lorikeets, honeyeaters and butterflies.
Generally adaptable in cultivation, responds to sunny, reasonably well drained positions in most soils.
Bush tucker
The Rosella bush produces red edible fruit high in vitamin C.
A pleasant tart-sweet flavour that goes well in salads, jellies, red sauces,
jams, cordials, syrups, fruit teas and wine.
The seeds may be roasted and ground into flour.
The young leaves may be steamed or stir-fried, also known as red sorrel.
Flowers
In common with most Hibiscus species, the individual flowers last only 1-2 days
but new flowers continue to open over a long period,
generally from spring through to summer.
