Republic of South Africa silver 50-cent coins were minted from 1961 to 1965, and then were replaced by nickel 50-cent coins. The silver coins had a mintage total of 143,000, and this 1963 coin was withdrawn from circulation in 1965.
THIS COIN: On the reverse is an image of Jan van Riebeeck (1619-1677), a Dutch East India Company Administrator, who landed at the Cape of Good Hope on 6 April 1652. The bilingual legend, "EENDRAG MAAK MAG * UNITY IS STRENGTH", appears round the outer edge. van Riebeeck's task was to establish a refreshment station for Dutch ships sailing from Europe to the Dutch East Indies.
On the obverse is a galloping Springbok with the wording "SUID-AFRIKA" and "SOUTH AFRICA" separated by the date at the top and the coin value at the bottom.
