This beautiful Powder or soap dish was made in Wheeling W.VA. by the LaBelle Pottery Company known for it's semi-porcelain (ceramic & porcelain) china. Measuring 4" high with handle and 4.75" wide, this lidded dish features a transferware pattern of royal purple flowers with gold stems and leaves. The upper rim of the bowl and the outer rim of the lid have a band of stippled or sponged gold. There are additional gold rings on both pieces. The lid has a fan shape at each handle base that is trimmed with gold while the bowl has scalloped panels trimmed in gold around the bottom portion. The lid is semi-scalloped. The china insert would prevent the powder puff from sinking into the powder or as soap dish it would provide drainage. There is a small surface chip on the inside of the lid. There is crazing throughout and some gold loss at use or contact areas. I would say this dish is in very good to excellent condition for over 120 years of age! There is a matching pitcher listed by another on this site also. Would be nice to pair them up.
