Kennedia nigricans is a groundcover or vine in the Fabaceae family. Some common names include Black Coral Pea or Black Kennedia. It is native to Australia. It is a vigorous groundcover that can grow 20 feet on the ground and can also climb up structures 10 feet. The flowers are striking in a near-black color with a yellow throat. They are in bloom from July until November. It can grow in most soils in full sun to part shade. It also is drought-tolerant and can withstand a light frost. The birds, bees, and butterflies will visit this one. Zones 8-11

Germination

Scarify the seeds with a nail file. Soak seeds for 12 hours. Sow seeds 1/4" deep into a well-drained, sandy compost. Cover seeds to their own depth with sand or grit. Place the seed tray in bright light and keep moist. Seeds may germinate slowly.
