FOLIO SOCIETY / ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON. TRAVELS WITH A DONKEY IN THE CEVENNES. Robert Louis Stevenson. Drawings by Edward Ardizzone. London: The Folio Society, 1967. First Edition, Sixth Printing, 1978. 5-1/2 x 8-3/4 inches; [10], 11-136, pages. Printed letterpress. Bound in full green cloth with a design by the artist; orange endpapers; top edge orange. Housed in publishers slipcase. The archival glassine that I have provided (torn at top) has been protecting this volume since I purchased it from The Folio Society, 1982 (approx.). One of the best of all travel books infused with the young Stevenson's joie de vivre.

"The journey which this little book is to describe was very agreeable and fortunate for me. After an uncouth beginning, I had the best of luck to the end. But we are all travellers in what John Bunyan calls the wilderness of this world -- all, too, travellers with a donkey: and the best that we find in our travels is an honest friend.  He is a fortunate voyager who finds many. We travel, indeed, to find them. They are the end and the reward of life. They keep us worthy of ourselves; and when we are alone, we are only nearer to the absent." (Stevenson to his literary adviser, Sidney Colvin.)

I think you will find that this "little book" will become a friend, an honest friend, from the beginning to the end, from Velay to Our Lady of the Snows, to the Country of the Camisards -- Farewell, Modestine!
