While the contemporary resurrection of the Orient Express has several intriguing incarnations-including the Venice-Simplon Orient Express and the Nostalgie Istanbul Orient Express and a few other routings provided by Intraflug AG-the service on each is at the same high level of luxury and nostalgic excellence. Italy's II Settebello, however, is one train that is often overbooked, and one may find oneself riding a substitute that does not quite live up to the Il Settebello name.
The legendary Oregon-to-Southern California Shasta! Coast Daylight, on the other hand, never failed to please its passengers, sweeping down the coast like an elongated flame, proclaiming with its very appearance that the refinements to be found in the passenger compartments of the train were as outstanding as its brilliant orange, red and black exterior colors.
When George Pullman brought out his first sleeping cars over a century ago, no one could have foreseen the sheer luxury of train travel as it is manifested on the great trains of the world. From the shower baths in each twinette compartment aboard Australia's famed Indian-Pacific transcontinental special to the very high level of dining and accommodation aboard South Africa's Blue Train, the current text is proof positive that travel by train can be an unforgettable experience.
Experience the sheer drama of the Canadian Rocky Mountains as you join us on a coast-to-coast trip aboard the fabulous Canadian. Hearken back to days of yore, and accompany an avid railfan as he samples no less than eight of the greatest American trains of the 1950s, in a round-trip, coast-to-coast ramble.
Take an eight-day journey aboard the Trans-Siberian Express, a luxury train in a class all by itself. Ride the Shinkansen 'Bullet Trains,' and take your ease in the barber chair while a crewmember secretary takes dictation aboard the unfortunately bygone Twentieth-Century Limited.
It's all here, and more, as you join us on a series of informative, dramatic rail journeys. Come aboard, and luxuriate in this generous selection of the world's great trains.
