  • Colton's Atlas: Joseph Colton was an American mapmaker from 1831 to 1890.  He founded the J.H. Colton Company. The company employed prominent cartographers and uses the best quality materials. This map is printed on high-quality paper from steel plates - the color was added by hand to each individual map.  These are antique maps from the earliest two-volume printing of Colton's Atlas.  This was one of the most accurate Atlas' of its era and the first venture into an Atlas after Colton built a reputation for high-quality individual maps. This Atlas is held in many museums including the Library of Congress and the MET.  This is an estate fresh find, new to market!  These maps frame really well, and make an amazing gift and conversation piece - 160+ years old - pre-civil war map! 
  • Dating: The map is copyright dated 1855. The volume folio Atlas has the title page date of 1856.  This is one of the earliest and rarest editions of the Colton Atlas.  You'll see the title page of this Atlas reads "Colton's Atlas of the World".  After 1856 the title was changed to "General Colton's Atlas".  This is the early version. You will see many later versions on eBay that claim to be a1855, but in reality, were printed at later dates.  On the later maps, you often see a different border, you also see the name "Colton's" printed above the state or city name on later editions.
  • Measurements: Sheet measures approximately 18.5 x 16 inches. Artwork measured from the edge of the border measures approximately 16.75 x 12.5 inches.
