Aristolochia Ringens
Also known as: Gaping Dutchman's Pipe, Birthwort

Aristolochia is a large plant genus with over 500 species.
This bizarre robust vine is native to Brazil. Large flowers are 7-10 inches long, greenish/cream, and marked with dark purple. These flowers have a specialized pollination mechanism. The plants are aromatic and their smelly scent attracts insects (don't worry the smell does not carry far from the plant). The inner part of the perianth tube is covered with hairs, acting as a fly-trap. These hairs then wither to release the fly, covered with pollen. It is highly entertaining.
The pale green leaves are round, almost kidney shaped. The fruit is a capsule, green maturing to brown and opening to release many fertile seeds.

Caterpillar larvae of swallowtail butterflies love to host and eat this vine, so you can be sure to see these beautiful creatures all over your yard.
Fast growing to about 20-30ft outside, and can spread 3 to 4 feet.
It is quite adaptable and can be grown in subtropical and tropical areas, any place where temperatures don't frequently drop below 30F. It also does well in low light conditions and can be grown indoors as a container plant for those of you in colder regions. Will tolerate high humidity or arid climates with little rain, although irrigation should be provided. Outside it can be be grown in either full sun or shade.

There is a long list of old medicinal uses of the Aristolochia.
The root of this plant is well known as an antidote for snake bites, even a reptile and snake repellant in the garden! However, in recent studies the Aristolochia does have high levels of toxins and carcinogens. So caution & additional research is strongly advised if you plan on using it medicinally or consuming it.

NO RETURNS/REFUNDS/REPLACEMENTS ON SEEDS

Most specialty seeds we offer are NOT fast to germinate.

Many take several weeks, months, and some even up towards a year depending on dormancy, region, season etc. It is important that the buyer understands that seeds are perishable products and seed germination can be adversely affected by such factors as mold/fungus, bugs, temperature, moisture content, light intensity, dormancy, care, contamination of planting media among many other reasons. These factors are totally out of The Plant Attraction's control and are the buyer's responsibility and risk. Germination recommendations are sent with each order and the buyer is free to research and use their own methods. Floating seeds do not always indicate that the seed is not viable. Many times it is a misconception because the seed does not have the density to sink in water. Accordingly, The Plant Attraction does not guarantee seeds to perform properly regardless of conditions or buyer's methods or mistakes. Since 2006 we have been doing our best to hand sort and provide the freshest, cleanest harvest that is free of defects and bugs.
